Upgraded version of the P-51, entering service in 1944. The fuselage was redesigned to integrate a bubble high-visibility canopy and the standardization of the Rolls Royce Merlin 61 high performance engine or the Packard license-built copy. 8,200 P-51Ds were produced and supplied to numerous air forces, serving into the 1990s.
